The two maps compare the layout of an Australian zoo in 1960 and at present, highlighting the changes that have occurred over time.
Overall, the site has been modernised considerably: new transport facilities and access points have been added, and the animal areas have been reorganised, while the picnic area on the eastern side has largely been retained.
In 1960, the harbour ran along the northern edge of the zoo. The African animals enclosure occupied the north-west, with Australian animals located further south along the western side. Moving eastwards, birds were situated near the top centre, whereas the seal show lay in the north-east corner. Another animal zone for chimpanzees was positioned in the middle to the east. A gift shop stood close to the southern centre, and a picnic area with seating was placed on the far right, connected by a network of footpaths.
At present, visitors can arrive by ferry at the harbour, and there is an additional entrance in the north-east, alongside the original south-west entrance. A cable-car system has been installed on the eastern half of the zoo, linking two stations and improving access towards the picnic area. In terms of exhibits, African animals have been relocated to a central position, the seal show has shifted closer to the middle, and the former birds and chimpanzees areas have been replaced by a wild animals zone in the north-west.
