The diagram illustrates the production of ethanol, a biofuel, from plant material and shows how carbon dioxide circulates throughout the system.
Overall, ethanol is generated through a series of stages that convert harvested biomass into sugars and then into fuel. Notably, the process forms a cycle in which carbon dioxide released during production and use is subsequently absorbed by growing plants with the aid of sunlight.
At the outset, plants and trees grow by using energy from sunlight while taking in carbon dioxide from the air. Once mature, this biomass is harvested and sent for pre-processing, a step that produces cellulose as the main intermediate material. The cellulose is then transferred to a processing facility, where it is broken down into simple sugars.
In the next stage, microbes are added to the sugars to ferment them, resulting in ethanol. The finished fuel is subsequently used in transportation, such as cars, trucks and aircraft. Carbon dioxide is emitted when ethanol is consumed, and this gas returns to the atmosphere, where it can be reused by plants, thereby completing the loop.
