Q1. Why are there people who like a law but want to change part of it?
In most cases, it’s because they like THE SPIRIT OF THE LAW itself, but they don’t totally agree with the letter. I mean it’s true that some laws are designed to PROTECT PEOPLE’S INTEREST and make society more EQUITABLE, but IN PRACTICE they are not always APPLICABLE. For example, JAYWALKING is PROHIBITED in many nations, but it’s hard to find a police officer who would actually give jaywalkers a fine or a ticket. It’s such a TRIVIAL act, and law enforcement officers usually just give STERN WARNINGS.
Glossary
-
the spirit of the law: Tinh thần của luật (the intended purpose or principle of the law)
-
protect people’s interest: Bảo vệ quyền lợi của người dân (safeguard the benefits or rights of people)
-
equitable: Công bằng (fair and just)
-
in practice: Trong thực tế (in actual application)
-
applicable: Có thể áp dụng (able to be applied)
-
jaywalking: Đi bộ sai luật (crossing the street illegally or unsafely)
-
prohibited: Bị cấm (forbidden)
-
trivial: Vặt vãnh (minor or insignificant)
-
stern warnings: Cảnh cáo nghiêm khắc (serious warnings)
Q2. Why is law important?
Law is such a crucial part of a CIVILISED society, since it keeps everybody from STEPPING ON OTHERS’ TOES, and maintains an order and stability that help everyone prosper. To put it in another way, the legal system MEDIATES the relationships between people, and ensures they could REAP THE REWARDS of their efforts. By contrast, in a LAWLESS society or where the laws are SKEWED TOWARDS protecting the benefits of a small group of people, those who are greedy and corrupt could conspire to take away the HARD-EARNED MONEY or properties of others by force, causing them to SUFFER IMMEASURABLY.
Glossary
-
civilised: Văn minh (advanced and organized)
-
step on others’ toes: Gây hại cho người khác (infringe on others’ rights)
-
mediate: Điều chỉnh (acts as a regulator)
-
reap the rewards: Hưởng thành quả (gain the benefits)
-
lawless: Không có luật lệ (without laws)
-
be skewed towards: Nghiêng về (biased toward)
-
hard-earned money: Tiền kiếm được bằng mồ hôi nước mắt (money earned through hard work)
-
suffer immeasurably: Chịu đựng đau khổ không kể xiết (endure immense suffering)
Q3. In what cases should people not be punished by law?
Off the top of my head, SELF-DEFENCE should certainly get people ACQUITTED, regardless of the consequences of their action. I mean people might be put in CIRCUMSTANCES where all they could do is whatever is necessary to protect themselves and their families from danger, such as when someone breaks into their house or when they are cornered and robbed on the streets. I guess it’s why it’s legal in many US states to shoot dead a burglar, although it’s TECHNICALLY murder and not allowed in many other countries.
Glossary
-
self-defence: Tự vệ (protecting oneself from harm)
-
acquitted: Được tuyên vô tội (cleared of charges)
-
circumstance: Hoàn cảnh (situation or condition)
-
technically: Về mặt lý thuyết (in a strict or legal sense)
Q4. Does understanding of law make a good leader?
Absolutely. An effective leader has to KNOW THE LAW LIKE THE BACK OF THEIR HAND in order to STEER THE SHIP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. Essentially, the one AT THE WHEEL has to balance between maximising the company’s profits and fulfilling legal obligations. And if they’re not careful, in the RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF PROFITABILITY, a simple, honest mistake could JEOPARDISE years of hard work of themselves and their underlings. This is especially true in today’s globalised world, where businesses operate ON A GLOBAL SCALE and the justice system is distinct in each nation.
Glossary
-
know the law like the back of sb’s hand: Hiểu luật như lòng bàn tay (know the law extremely well)
-
steer the ship in the right direction: Đưa công ty đi đúng đường (guide the organization correctly)
-
at the wheel: Người cầm lái (in a leadership position)
-
relentless pursuit of profitability: Cuộc đua lợi nhuận không khoan nhượng (unceasing effort to gain profits)
-
honest mistake: Sai lầm vô ý (unintentional error)
-
jeopardise: Làm nguy hiểm (put at risk)
-
on a global scale: Trên quy mô toàn cầu (worldwide)
Q5. Which one is easier to follow, national or international law?
I’m no expert in this, but I guess the latter is more COMPLICATED, as it has to TAKE INTO ACCOUNT plenty of factors and try to RECONCILE them. A law perfectly fine in one nation might be ILLEGITIMATE in another, such as when it PERTAINS TO POLARISING ISSUES like CHILD LABOUR, women’s rights or freedom of speech. So even when you want to obey it, you still need to THINK LONG AND HARD, CONSULT a lawyer even, just to make sure you’re not INADVERTENTLY breaking any rule.
Glossary
-
complicated: Phức tạp
-
take sth into account: Xem xét điều gì đó (consider something)
-
reconcile: Dung hòa (balance or harmonize)
-
illegitimate: Không hợp pháp (not legal)
-
pertain to polarising issues: Liên quan đến các vấn đề gây tranh cãi (relate to controversial topics)
-
child labour: Lao động trẻ em (employment of children)
-
think long and hard: Suy nghĩ kỹ lưỡng (think carefully and deeply)
-
consult: Tham khảo ý kiến (seek advice from)
-
inadvertently: Vô tình (unintentionally)
