Q1. What should celebrities do to protect their privacy?

There are many measures that movie stars, top-tier athletes and other celebrities could take to guard against intruders. They could hire professional bodyguards who would be with them 24/7, like Messi does. Or they could use their financial resources to buy up all the land around their house, like Mark Zugerberk, the founder of Facebook did. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is notorious for building an enormous fence around his humble abode, which is illegal but he’s willing to pay his monthly fine. With the kind of wealth and influence they have, there shouldn’t be any trouble in keeping their private lives private.

Vocabulary:

  • top-tier athletes: Vận động viên đỉnh cao (elite athletes)

  • intruder: Kẻ đột nhập (someone who enters a place without permission)

  • financial resources: Tiềm lực tài chính (money and assets, emphasizing financial power)

  • enormous: Khổng lồ (extremely large)

  • notorious: Tai tiếng (infamous)

  • humble abode: Căn nhà “khiêm tốn” (modest home, with quotation marks to reflect the sarcastic tone)

  • illegal: Bất hợp pháp (against the law)

Q2. Is it easier or more difficult to achieve fame today than in your grandparents’ time?

On the one hand, it has become much easier to rise to fame these days, in the age of social media. Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok have democratised access to fame, and they could put an ordinary person in the limelight overnight. However, whether it would last is a different matter, as easy come, easy go. These minor celebrities will struggle immensely just to live up to their past glory, and they could easily be swept by the wayside. Simply put, it might be easier to reach the top, but it is actually much harder to stay there.

Vocabulary:

  • rise to fame: Trở nên nổi tiếng (become famous)

  • democratised: Bình dân hóa (made accessible to everyone)

  • put sb in the limelight: Đưa ai đó vào tâm điểm chú ý (make someone the center of attention)

  • easy come, easy go: Dễ đến, dễ đi (gained easily, lost easily)

  • minor celebrities: Người nổi tiếng hạng hai (lesser-known celebrities)

  • struggle immensely: Đấu tranh dữ dội (face great difficulties)

  • live up to their past glory: Giữ vững hào quang xưa (meet the expectations of their past success)

  • be swept by the wayside: Bị lãng quên (be forgotten or overlooked)

Q3. Do you think popular children will grow up to be popular adults?

I would say they stand a better chance than those who haven’t achieved fame as a kid. Obviously they’ve got a lot of experience under their belt, at least in how to cope with being the center of attention. They also know their way around the entertainment industry, and have a lot of useful connections, which are poised to be helpful in future projects. Nevertheless, I've noticed that many of these child celebrities can never find the same level of success they had as a child, like Macaulay Culkin, the star of the Home Alone series, or the actor that played Harry Potter, I can’t recall his exact name.

Vocabulary:

  • be under sb’s belt: Đã tích lũy (learned or succeeded in, and now a part of your experience)

  • cope with: Đối phó với (deal with or manage)

  • know their way around: Thành thạo (be experienced or familiar with)

  • connection: Mối quan hệ (relationship or network)

  • be poised to: Có tiềm năng để (be ready or likely to)

Q5. What benefits are there when a child is popular at school?

Oh popularity is often synonymous with being catered to. If for some reason a child becomes particularly well-liked at school, they could receive a lot of favors, like when they need to borrow some study equipment or notebooks from friends. The teachers would inadvertently pay more attention, and could even make allowances for them. Late submission of homework or tardiness, for instance, are more likely to be forgiven.

Vocabulary:

  • synonymous with: Đồng nghĩa với việc (having the same meaning or being closely related to)

  • well-liked: Được yêu mến (liked or admired by many people)

  • inadvertently: Vô tình (without intention, unintentionally)

  • make allowances for: Tha thứ, tạo điều kiện (be lenient or forgiving)

  • tardiness: Sự muộn giờ (lateness, arriving late)
